Ever since Man first landed on the Moon, we've looked to the future,to all the possibilities, but the American people soon lost interest. What was the greatest achievement in the history of Mankind soon became just a passing fad. But I think in the last decade there has been a renewed interest in the exploration of space and this project is just the kick in the pants that the American puplic needs to wake up and realize that we need this. Not just to set another milestone in American history, but to set things in motion toward the 21 century and beyond. We need to start thinking about the future for ourselves and our children. be a

I like your program, which looks quite realistic, but you're thinking small. I'd like to look ahead to terraforming the Moon. There's LOTS of real-estate there, and its easy visibility from here means that the project would fire the public's imagination like no invisible Mars project ever could. Rough calculations indicate that the quantity of ice needed to make Lunar oceans and atmosphere could also speed up the Moon's rotation to produce a 24-hour day (bring those icecubes in at a low angle at the Lunar equator). Simply increasing the Moon's angular p with paired equatorial impacts at Lunar longitudes 180 deg apart would have virtually no effect on tides, or anything else on Earth except the nighttime view. The fact that Luna's gravity can't hold an atmosphere is relevant only over geological time. Another botec says that the atmosphere would need topping up only every few thousand years to remain usable by us. Your moonbase should be seen as a staging base for robot solar-sail craft that will bring back ice from the outer system. If you're going to shoot for the Moon, think big. And name an ocen after me. To Mary Erickson - Boy have you got your SF films wrong. You are referring to Outland, not Alien, and it took place on Io, one of the Galilean moons of Jupiter, not Saturn. As for your fears about bad human behavior moving into space, it is possible, but if we wait for the human condition to change then we will never do anything. If just one big planetoid hits Earth while all humans are on it, then that is the end of the species and we will never develop for the better. So let's get out of this cradle and into space. We won't be perfect, but the harshe environment of space also will not tolerate the waste and aggression that permeates on Earth now. Sitting still just gets you run over.

To clarify, I don't mean to imply that you would become this way, but as more groups moved out into space under these conditions, one of them would sooner or later start this, forcing all into an arms race. You might be among the first casualties, if you assume the benignity of all who are space inclined.

To clarify, I don't mean that your organization would eventually become evil, but as other groups advanced into space with such a situation, this would develop on someone's part, and eventually force all into an arms race. You might even be among the first casualties, if you are assuming the benignity of all space inclined people.

I notice one of your writers in a file about legal hassles seems to suggest that as long as there is no enforcement and you are ahead in this space race, you can just do as you please like Jackson's moving of the Seminoles against the Supreme Court's orders. True, you could. And you could probably develop weapons systems as well and thumb your nose at everyone, all treaty law that encumbers - granted, it can encumber - but the results could be quite bad. Have you seen movies like Alien, or that one set on a mining colony on a moon of Saturn's with a drug problem, or any of several whose premise is some huge outer space version of a multinational corporation inclined to abuse its workers (e.g., Bechtel) and to blow up competition, etc. This sort of aggressively libertarian approach would lead to this.

Colonization of the moon is the first step in mankind reaching out to the stars. I think the Artemis Project has a unique and credible plan for achieving this. Heck, a 100 years from now the Lunar Resources Company might own half the Solar System--kinda makes you want to throw in your $35.

I am wondering why the Artemis Project is considering spending so much money on their own unique SSTO when Nasa is already developing their own for commercial use. The X34 seems perfect for the job. I would like to hear what people think of this. Oh and it won't be long with your project coming along to fing out if there really are lunar ruins and groups will be able to send their own probes to Mars to photograph Cydonia. What are Artemises plans if the discovery of lunar ruins comes about as hinted by Richard Hoagland.

The idea of getting a lunar base built through commercialization and through the use of private vs. gov't funds seems to be the only way in which this megaproject will become a reality. The willingness of Corporations and Industries to be a part of this project bodes well for all the peoples of Earth. Initially, the sales of what may seem to be valueless trinkets, moondust, space crystals, rocks, etc., would in fact go a long ways to providing the necessary funds for a permanent colonization of the Moon. One can easily see the major auction houses competing for the opportunity to auction off the "First" private collections of Moon stones, and the like for substantial sums of money. Colonization of the Moon will herald a new age of man, where we shall look at our species as one race, Earthlings, where we will abate the increasing howls of dissent and xenophobia which threaten to destroy us all and are no doubt a product of overcrowding our planet, competing for dwindling resources, and above all, the loss of the global ideals which that unite us. We've forgotten that we have much more in common, as Earthlings, than we have differences. Colonization of the Universe may be the fullfillment of Earth's aspirations for mankind, and of the creative force, or "God", which through 18 Billion years, made us what we are today. It may be the very reason for our exitence. Failure to pursue this end places us at greater peril with each passing day. And every step taken to realize this noblest of ambitions, brings mankind one step closer to our creator. Ad Astra per Aspera!

This is probably the only way for mankind to be a spacefaring species. NASA and ESA can go on with their programs forever, but if this succeds it will really change the rules of space. I cant wait. Good luck.

Ben Bova's book "Welcome to Moonbase" has been an inspiration to me for years. Analog magazine has also been a dream to explore but stumbling upon this place while looking around the Web was a revelation. If this site excites you, (and if your reading the guestbook chances are that it does) then find a copy of Dr. Bova's book and read an issue or 2 of "Analog: Science Fiction and Fact" then come back and find out what you can do. That's what I'm doing next!

Guess I'd better add my name to this list.

I am an attorney just admitted to practice in California in December, 1995. I would in every way welcome the opportunity to develop a practice in the area of space law. Entry into the law occurred midlife. Prior experience is extremely varied but includes a fair amount of professional writing that, in turn, included taking very technical subjects and translating them into articles accessible to popular audiences. Some examples are an overview of the physiological and psychological effects of negative atmospheric ions that appeared in New West and a profile of the late design scientist Buckminster Fuller that appeared in Rolling Stone. I am currently hatching plans for what I hope will become a survey of what private enterprise would like to see in the way of a legal structure for the commercial development of outer space.

I think that Luna should be turned into a giant nuclear waste dump, then have all the waste sites ignite in a tremendous chain reaction, pushing Luna into the galaxy with the Artemis colony aboard to explore strange new worlds, seek out new life forms, and to go boldly where no politically correct human has gone before! Get dumping!

Might I suggest -- a simple smelter. Make aluminum rolls, launch them into a low Earth orbit and have the governments pay YOU for it to make THIER space station. They save cash on the old, outdated shuttle launches to bring up the materials, and you make $cash$ to build more smelters, mine the oxygen (and sell that), get into the Helium-3 once Fusion is handled (and won't that generate some cash....)! But, even though the smelter is small and doesn't have to put out much to get started, it's expensive to fuel it..... solar?
