Has anybody thought that Nasa is throwing away a cargo, transport, landing

My views on a lunar base have been in print and in private for many years. It
has been a long while since I was in the fight. I have been in L5, NSS, Ladybase
One, the beginings of Lunar Prospector, the Experimental Spacecraft Society and
other ventures that just couldn't get it done. This project means a successful
future for humanity. This project is extremly important. There is no doubt. There
is no discussion. We must do it-no one else will. Everyone of us must become
involved to the hilt, must in any way, all the time, move forward. We need
simplicity, service and sweat. If you have money give it up. If you have time
or talent put it to use now. We must get it together to get on with the task
before us. I am in for the fight, the battle, the war and the victory that will
come with us waving to earth from the moon. ad lunam

I'm presently representing an emerging country and it's resource owners that
have an ideal location at 2 degrees latitude for a launch site facility. I have
opened dialog with Kistler Areospace and a major communications company for
developing this launch facility. We wish to have an all non-military facility
developed for commercial enterprises. This site would be very secure and that
which had been used by our military during world war II. If you have interest in

The idea of people doing something so benificial without waiting for
government long past due. I am a computer network specialist, construction
engineering , project manager, a scuba instructor, and a farmer. I am writing to
add myself to the growing list of supporters.
The pioneers who came west to settle north america didn't wait for government to
have things set up for them, they came and created life for themselves. I am
glad that spirit still lives as more and more people become reliant on government
as an over protective parent.
Just as an aside, any plans to look at the oceans for exploration, we know so
little about them (less than the moon)?

I hate to this up but I haven't seen the question asked--what
will happen when there is a catastrophic failure and all crew members

my life for something so grand, but still it could led to a
lot of bad press.

Just going over your technical notes on computer redundancy in the guidance

processing power, you'll need it. Protect those processors, If I remember my
physics, it's possible to get state changes from particle bombardment.
I'll be gathering addtional information regarding this organization. I am very

At last! Private ventures are precisely the way we will actually suceed in
space exploration. As so many have said here and before, we
have to step out ourselves. I'm a graduate student in Architecture but my

Has anyone considered the idea of an orbital tether/ space elevator?
I've been following the developments in carbon nanotube research
and it seems to be progressing nicely. If you haven't i'll try to summarize it.
Using a material of extremely high tensile strength ie. carbon nanotubes it
would be theoretically possible to lower a cable from an asteroid above the
geosynchronous point
down to earth to provide a low-cost means of exiting the gravity well
So far they haven't been able to produce the nanotubes in large quantities but
they are progressing rapidly. Thank you.

How about an alternative to your low orbit space station.
Looks like MIR's life is somewhat limited. Couldn't you
buy the core module with the docking adapters from the
Russians. Otherwise they would will deorbit the module.
With the Progress they are going to use to deorbit the
module it could be brought to a lower orbit instead.
Then you have a core and the docking adapters for use as
the nucleus of your station. Already in orbit and a proven
commodity. Since the demands you would place on it are
probably less than what the Russians are you could get by
with the module in spite of its age. Looks to me like there
are several pluses with this approach. Talk about
bootstrapping, salvage on the high seas and all that?!!

This looks promising! I did notice, though, that your list of companies and
industries is very small and almost none are in the same field.
I would like to suggest that you begin some type of contests in specified areas
to promote some competition. This will also reduce your costs.
Oh, watch out for too many specialists and not enough true leadership (common
sense). Someone needs to tie all the pieces together or you drop the ball at the
most critical time.

Technology exists and I strongly believe that You would have no trouble in
finding people who would work almost for free. When given the opportunity and a
place to stay I would work for food just to get the mankind to moon and even

It almost sounds insane--I guess we have been taught to rely on
the Govt. too much...The only way to cut the cost and to actually

I have been looking at the site and I am very interested.
I am now a member of the National Space Society, but I fear
that we cannot rely on governament to finance space on a
reliable basis. It would be nice to have some hard financial
data and also I think that to make the project more
financially appealing to serious supporters there should be
be an outside accounting firm to review the finances of the
from time to time and these should be published to the
the members, workers and investors.
But so far you have done an excellent job. I will join soon!

I am a marketing manager in a field completely unrelated to
space exploration. However, I have a degree in Geographical
Information Systems and have a vision so strong that I have had
problems with my focus in my current job. It is vindication for
me to see such support for the ideas presented by Artemis and the
producers of Contact for example. I am a leader and a people
manager and in some way I will be a part of this or other means of
exploring our universe. Humanity is driven by curiosity. In the
spirit of Columbus, the Wright Brothers, Edison, Lewis and Clark,
and so many other world changing humans, I vow to forge ahead and
be a part of the new exploration. If there is a way for me to
support my family while I attempt to achieve this goal I will be
happy, however, sometimes we must do without to meet our dreams.

With the large number of positive responses to your site, I
feel that you should consider using the friends and members
to build the spacecraft. From reading others' contributions,
I gather that the cheapest fuel would be a liquid methane and
liquid oxygen combination. There is considerable non-military
experience in handling these gases and in using them without
using expensive and exotic technology. That's my first point.
The best payload:take off weight ratio would be provided by
a VTOVL system such as those which Gatland, Bono and Hudson
proposed. Hudson's concept of using a 'Zero Stage' re-usable
launch booster is worth re-examining, as winged schemes look
elegant but are appalling wasters of fuel. Forget the
capitalism option, - amongst your supporters there seem to
be enough people to do a 'Can Do' low-cost job of building
a shuttle from basic components. The hardest task, in this
over-regulated day and age, may be finding a launchsite and
gaining permission to launch. That's point two.
Going to the Moon directly from Earth is the outdated and
(expletive deleted) NOVA concept. Consider the following
mission profile, which means changing vehicles but is far
more efficient :-
(A)VTOVL shuttle to Earth orbit to transfer station.
(B)Earth-to-Lunar-orbit shuttle. This could use a solar
powered ion rocket, or a directly solar heated propellant.
(C)VTOVL lunar shuttle. Operating from a second transfer
station, this would ferry passengers and freight down to
the lunar surface.
After establishing a modest lunar base, hydrates or ice from
the lunar poles (poss. also Aristarchus ? See Clarke) can be
turned into propellant for the lunar VTOVL, and maybe for the
orbit-to-orbit ship as well. That's Point Three.
My interest in this must probably remain as goodwill, but I
do have a degree in Environmental Science, and an interest in
giving space to people, rather than a costly elite. Yours
and so on, Richard.

Picturing the moment on the moon when you rise from your bed
and greet the morning with a blue earth shining out your window is
truly a romantic vision. However, the participants of this project
must also see beyond the romanticism and realize that once you get
up from your lunar bed you still have to go to work day in and day
out. When the daily view of the Earthrise becomes less than
awe-inspiring, then your purpose for being there is all that is
left to drive you. My purpose? To help build a base that can act
as a manufacturing and staging facility for further space exploration.

Why not include postage stamps along with the return
sample? I paid $30+ for a stamp, from the post office
that had been orbited on one of the shuttles.
Also if you want to advertise logos how about
a Web Site on the moon. Make it part of the rover.
You are going to communicate with the rover aren't
you. Include a tv camera and a billboard for the
sponsors logos. Would be nice if you could get the
camera to pan some, variety of scenes. Current
earth image from the moon. Surely the bandwidth for
communicating with the rover would handle a website.
Remember the Echo balloon that was orbited around
earth late 50's early 60's? Something along those
lines that could be viewed on or around the moon from

The Eart is falling apart. It's all going to end in about
250 years or so - with global warming and all. We should
really think of the future -- instead of pumping billions
of dollars into the military, we should invest in space
exploration -- projects just like the Artemis project --
and environmental research.

You raise many more questions than you answered. The concept
of a commercial venture is not the first to be considered nor
will it be the last. The approach is sound, but the logisitics
what a formidable task. The approach of an international space
consortium might help. I have a great deal of passion about
establishing an organization that will take the next step into
the unknown and space. I and my resources welcome the challenges
that you may need to task us with.

I just finished a 20 page paper on the future benefits of
Helium3 fusion and why the funding of such a project should
be drastically increased. Currently, I am working with an ex
Deputy Administrator of NASA to acquire funding from the JPL
in order to establish a mission plan for a manned trip to
Mars. I think that the creation of a lunar colony would be
an integral step in accomplishing such a goal and would like
to learn more about your project. It's human nature to
explore that which is unknown. If for no other reason we
should search the stars simply because they are there and we
haven't done it yet.

Not only will this project be the birth place for new technology
and advancements in science, but it will guarantee a better future
for the generations after us. Whether those generations colonize
Mars, Io, or another celestial sphere, they will look upon the
people of this project as the "preservers" and protectors of
mankind's fate.

Better on an airless, lifeless planetoid than fouling our own backyard. Good base

Was channel surfing and ran across the TLC show. Glad to
you all getting some exposure. Suggest that the space station
and/or lunar lander take a chapter from the Americas cup and NASCAR.
Sponsors names/logo's spread all over the outside. With the largest
contributors getting the best placement, nearest the cameras. I
know you are going bury the habitat portion of the lander but
even while that is going on there will be camera footage. Same
thing for the crews outfits, like the NASCAR drivers outfits, more
sponsor logos etc. I understand that Dupont pays $5 million a year
for their NASCAR paintjob. They get 5 times that back in their
share of t-shirt's and other advertising revenues. Will be sending

A little far fetched perhaps but a working theory from countless
sci-fi novelas was the idea of a mass-driver type system of transport.
I dont necessarily condone the transporting of passengers in this
manner but transportation of material done this way could be
economically beneficient. Basically a catapult or gun system from
earth using kinetic energy to propel cargo holds to a predetermined
orbital site(Really I just added this to fill in the comment field)
;).

If nothing else, a project like this might force the Governments
of the world to agree on a better legal framework for the Moon than
the Moon Treaty. That treaty is just ridiculous with its idea of
a collective ownership of everything on the Moon, and is only to
the detriment of space projects. Thankfully none of the spacefaring
countries are parties to the Moon Treaty, neither is my home country
Sweden.
I am interested in space law and the legal rights to any celestial
bodies, or parts of them, outside of Earth. there have to be
some rules on private ownership of real estate on other celestial
bodies. To encourage space exploration, the best thing would
probably be to give ownership to anyone settling and developing
an area. Then you would really get something for your efforts.
Thanks to Marcus Welde whose link page with political links brought me to you.

I learned of your efforts through a letter from Ian Strock in
Analog magazine. The project fascinates me, and I consider it long
overdue. I am an electronics engineer, and if my abilities could
be of assistance, I am interested.

I found this site by accident while seaching for information on
the Periodic Table of Elements for my son. I am truly fascinated
with the possibility of commercial colonization of the moon. It's
about time. I certainly hope that Artemis is successful in my
lifetime.

I have been interested in this type of project since I was

to see so many with the same interests. I do know one thing,
hopefully,I will be in space long before 2010.

Idea/Question. I have often wondered about the viability of
keeping the external fuel tank of the shuttle attatched after
orbital insertion. Would it then be possible to inject them into
an orbit which would eventually have them arrive in Lunar orbit?
If this is the case, then there you have "instant" building material
for Lunar construction.

The loss of earth's ecosystem is inevitable. It is not a matter
of "if" it will happen but "when" will happen. The end may come
by cometary collision, environmental degradation, or other means
but it is certain to come. A single planet species has no future.
Even before the Apollo 11 mission delivered us to the threshold of
an interplanetary presence, the pioneer spirit of our people was
flagging. In the face of daunting social problems we turned inward
in an attempt to right with our unjust social institutions and
traditions. We put space progress on the back burner. It is time
to put the introspective "Age of Aquarius" behind us. We need bold
leaders who will point the way just as John Kennedy did when he
implored us not to "wait and rest." Space is the challenge of our
time. Progress in all areas of human and environmental affairs will
happen co-currently with space progress. The Apollo program was
the largest peacetime government project ever. Technicians, engineers,
doctors, and managers were deiven to the "cutting edge" of their
respective pursuits by the moon program. All of us still reap the
wonderful gains wrought by their efforts.

The American pioneer spirit has all but vanished. In the sixties,
the American public was motivated by President Kennedy to put a
man on the moon by the end of the decade.
America met that challange in 1969. Come on America, wake up!
Why can't the United States of America do something great once
again? If this country is ever going to get
back on top of things, we have to start properly educating our
children because they are the future. If America does not wake up
soon and smell the coffee, I'm afraid we
might not ever get on top again!

In the 60's, America had the drive it needed to succeed
in the space program. We had the goal of getting American
astronauts on the moon and the drive of beating the Russians
there. Now that the cold war has ended, the competitive angle
is gone. What this country, and the entire world, needs is a
new goal in the realms of space, and it needs to be bigger than
the space station that should be forming soon. We need to satisfy
the natural human instinct to explore. The red planet calls
our name. The moon also beckons for a return visit with possibilities
of colonization. If we ever want to see the space program
succeed again, a mission of epic prortion such as this needs
to be tackled to get the support of the people as was the case
with the Apollo missions. With this, new technologies will be
dicovered that will send us well into the 21 century. (How do
you think we have things such as velcro, freeze dryed foods,
dehydrated beverages and meals, portable computers, ect...?)

If we could send a manned mission to the moon using 1960's
Technology and the average Nintendo has more computing power that
the Apollo capsule... What are we doing NOT going. We are victims
of a society looking for quick returns instead of long range growth.
It shows up in corporate buyouts, downsizing ... everything except
making decent products... Let's get going now!
